Houston

July 11, 2016

The car was quickly packed up and we got on the road. A relatively uneventful, but traffic filled drive, saw us arriving in Houston at about 6:00 PM, which lucky for us was just in time for dinner! Our hosts for the next couple days would be friends of Robert’s who graciously let us stay in their home. After dinner we headed to the movie theater to watch Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. All in all, a pretty funny movie.

Entering Texas

The next day in Houston we woke up and headed downtown to check out the Natural Sciences Museum (and Khyber wanted to run around the park catching Pokemon). The museum was pretty good, but even better was the ice cream we got after. Leaving Houston we hit five o’clock traffic meaning we didn’t get back to the house until later, and after some pizza for dinner we hit the pool to hang out and catch up with Robert’s friends before heading to sleep a little after midnight.

Waking up the next morning we ended up deciding to go check out the Texas Military Museum. The museum had a lot of old, and several new, military vehicles such as tanks, Humvees, and MRAPs. The tour was guided by a very cool retired Marine who had a lot of fun stories for us. A quick stop for gelato again after the museum and then an hour and a half of traffic got us back to the house where we were staying just in time for German schnitzel. After dinner we watched Zootopia (definitely recommend) and then went for a midnight swim.

Dallas

July 14, 2016

Unfortunately, this morning saw us leaving our wonderful hosts in Houston as we were supposed to be in Dallas by the end of the day. After packing up and saying goodbyes we hit the road for Dallas. Our first stop in Dallas was the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza which is dedicated to John F. Kennedy. The museum turned out to be incredibly fascinating as it walked you through the the life and presidency of JFK. The museum is actually based on the same floor where Lee Harvey Oswald fired the infamous shots that killed JFK. After the museum we quickly checked out a nearby park and then headed to meet up with some of Khyber’s family for dinner a place to stay for the night. After catching up eating some of the best hummus we have had, we headed to sleep. The next morning we would be heading to San Antonio.

San Antonio

July 15, 2016

As it turns out, neither of set an alarm, thinking the other person was going to set it, so we didn't end up getting out of Dallas until much later than intended. A couple hours later, a quick pit stop in Austin to try some barbecue food at the Ironworks restaurant (which came highly recommended) quickly turned the day around though. After getting back on the road, we headed down towards San Antonio, where we had hoped to camp at Guadeloupe River State park. As it turned out though, the state park was booked so we headed down the road to a private campground. The site given to us ended up being near the grazing area for a herd of cows, so avoiding cow patties quickly became a top priority. As it turned out the owners of the campground were very into Pokemon Go, so they let us ride around the campsite with them in their golfcart as we caught Pokemon. All in all a succesfull day (Khyber caught 7 pokemon). The next morning would be the longest day yet, as we had to cross all of Texas and head into New Mexico.
